TREES IN CUBA

A very important group of trees in Cuba are the Palms, due to their ecological role. The Cuban Royal Palm (Roystonea regia), a majestic and ornamental palm species, is the more common tree of the Cuban's lands, where it is recognized as national tree. The strange and prehistoric Cork Palm (Microcycas calocoma), surviving of the cretaceous period. The Cuban Bottle Palm (Colpothrinax wrightii) endemic to Cuba.

Among other trees in the Cuban flora are included the Shortleaf Fig (Ficus Citrifolia), very common tree in Cuba that may cover a wide area due to their ability to drop aerial roots from branches and spread horizontally. The Kapok (Ceiba pentandra), gigantic tree and venerated in several of the religions that are practiced in Cuba.

Among other endemic species of Cuba we can name: Cuban Magnolia (Magnolia cubensis), Cuban Dragon Tree (Dracaena cubensis), the Cuban Pine (Pinus cubensis), the Dwarf Turk's Cap Cactus (Melocactus matanzanus) and the Cuban Epiphyte (Pinguicola lignicola).
