It's now a common thing to see regattas coming to Cuba from other places and international motorboat and sports fishing contests, such as the Ernest Hemingway Marlin Tournament, in the Gulf Stream, which runs strongly northwards from the western part ofCuba. But, in general, the best fishing is at the drop in the seabed, close to the coast or in the channels between the cays.

The marinas, or water-sports bases which can be found throughout the archipelago in ports, hotel complexes and even isolated places that are practically untouched by man offer excursions on yachts and catamarans (including living-on-board programs near isolated cays), fishing boats and other means.

They also provide moorings and anchorages, communications, commissary service, repairs and maintenance, fuel, food, water, electric power, Immigration and Customs services, lodgings and (in many cases) recreational options for yachtsmen. This is particularly important because Cuba is near the main shipping routes in this hemisphere: the Yucatán Channel, the Old Bahama Channel and the Windward Passage. The ports of Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos and moorings at Trinidad and Francés Point (on the Isle of Youth) are included in the itineraries of cruise ships which ply the Caribbean.
