Jazz Jazz is one of most popular musica en Havana
Jazz is one of the city's most popular musical forms and the Havana jazz sound is unique, the result of centuries of musical mixture to which Africa and Spain contributed the main ingredients and China, France, Italy, Mexico, Argentina and the United States added the seasoning. The sophisticated, cosmopolitan result attracts aficionados from all over the world—both to perform and to listen?and the resulting cross-cultural fertilisation enlarges the virtuous circle of continually-evolving creative development

ANTECEDENTS OF THE FESTIVAL: On December 16 to 19, 2004 the XXI edition of the “JAZZ Plaza”, International Festival took place in Havana, this time with the participation of 75 groups and soloists; of them, 15 coming from Canada, the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, Germany, England, France, Spain, Japan and South Africa. Also of great impact were the two-piano concerts offered by the Maestros Michael Legrand of France and Chucho Valdés of Cuba and the one of Maestro Y. Fukumura of Japan who directed the National Symphonic Orchestra with Maestro Frank Fernández as soloist.

Cuba was represented by 60 groups and soloists, the concerts of Chucho Valdés and its group Irakere New Conception paying homage to Mayra Caridad Valdés, as well as, the special concerts of trumpets and guitars in Jazz performed by important Cuban soloists and foreigners were amongst the most important.

The participation of young musicians winners of the Jojazz Contest should also be mentioned. It was considered by many as impressive and innovative.   In total 25 concerts were offered in 6 theatres and rooms that acted as venues, as well as in the Casa de la Cultura.

Parallel to the Festival there was a theoretical Colloquy in which 14 master classes were given, with lecturers coming from the United States and Cuba, with topics related to the Cuban woman in the Jazz, international cooperation in the history and education of jazz, and others.   Also presentations and sales of music magazines; “Salsa Cubana” and “Clave”, the presentation and sale of the album “Irakere 30 years” were carried out, as well as special performances at the Irakere Club, “La Zorra y el Cuervo”, JazzCafè and O´Farrill Club.
